Are You Distracted by B.S.O.’s.? It’s probably holding you back.

in Cathy's Blog

I’ve got it. I don’t know if it’s contagious but it’s a very real affliction in entrepreneurs especially.

Another name could be ‘option overload’ – there are so many opportunities you want to pursue, you’re pulled in every direction and making a choice is so-o-o-o difficult because they’re ALL good!

A post on Facebook by my good friend and colleague Isabelle Mercier triggered my self-diagnosis. She asked what 3 things were challenging me right now. My first thought was ‘nothing really’ and then I started really thinking about it. I replied, “B.S.O.’s”  Bright Shiny Objects. I’ve been blessed with so many opportunities that I have a challenging time choosing. I’m not alone. Most of my coaching clients have the same affliction and the sad part is, when faced with this issue, most entrepreneurs fail to make a choice at all.

“I’m afraid I’ll make the wrong choice.” or, “I’m worried that this is the ‘one’ and if I don’t do it I’ll be missing out on something great.” This is the perfect way to stress yourself to the max and get nowhere fast!

For me, it’s saying”no”.  A long time ago I realized that there was only one of me and to be effective in what I do, I chose to work with a maximum of 6 one-to-one coaching  clients at any given time in addition to courses and seminars that I teach. Why? Because each client is unique and their situation and needs while similar, are different than their colleagues. I believe that each client deserves attentiveness and my ‘A’ game and frankly, more than six starts to fray at my edges. What I found was that I didn’t lose business, it multiplied and as a result, I have a waiting list. Cool huh?

So I ask again, are you distracted by B.S.O.’s? I’m not sure that it’s curable – we are entrepreneurs after all! But there is a way to minimize the paralyzing symptoms. Ask yourself :

– How will it effect me physically? Will I look forward to it or will it create stress?

– How will it effect me mentally? Will I gain new tools and skills that I can seamlessly integrate into my current offerings?

– How will it effect me financially? Will it create immediate revenue (e.g. within the next 3 months) or will it be a long term investment?

If it’s not aligning with your goals then you know what to say … don’t underestimate the power of saying “no.”
