Entrepreneurs Drive Our Economy

“Entrepreneurs create businesses, businesses create jobs and people with jobs make good customers.” ~ Ed Sappin

Entrepreneurs play a huge role in a country’s economy and are more than just small business owners – they introduce new and innovative technologies, products and services AND create job opportunities.

Over the years of working with entrepreneurs, I have found that startups fall into 2 main categories:

  1. Opportunity Entrepreneurs: those that have found demands in the market and have an opportunity to provide a product or service that is not currently in non-existent, or unavailable and
  2. Necessity Entrepreneurs: those that want a better work environment, tired of being an employee or frankly, have no other options.

Both of these types of entrepreneurs contribute to our economic growth through increased competition, opening up new markets and of course providing job opportunities.

Entrepreneurs are driven to succeed and most of them have overcome challenges and obstacles to achieve their goals. A byproduct of their determination is the inspiration and encouragement to others that they too can be successful; that their ideas may not be so far fetched and it’s ok to ‘push the envelope’.

Interestingly, the percentage of the population involved in entrepreneurship in Canada has increased more than 50% over the last ten years, according to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. In 2021 about 20% of the adult population was involved in planning or starting up a business.

Domestically and globally, we need entrepreneurs to keep looking for new ways of doing things. We need them to question the status quo of systems, processes and structures; to find the inefficiencies and innovate!

In the right conditions, entrepreneurs can be the catalyst for economic prosperity.

As I said in my first post in this series, entrepreneurship is not for everyone and it takes a special kind of ‘crazy’ to make it work. I personally, have experienced both being employed and being the employer and call me crazy, but I’ll take being in business for myself any day!

There are incredible resources that I have shared throughout this 7 post series for Global Entrepreneurship Week so if you haven’t seen the other posts, plan to do so. If you need more info or have questions, I am connected to people that can help you in your entrepreneurial endeavors. Reach out. Ask for help. I’m just an email/msg away.
