Invest in Our Planet

in Cathy's Blog

This year’s #EarthDay2022 theme is #InvestInOurPlanet to encourage governments, corporations, and private citizens to take solid steps toward following more sustainable practices, buying from responsible companies, and taking more of an active role in our Earth’s wellbeing.

Here are a few ways you can make a difference…

*REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE No brainer, right? Then why do we still have so much garbage?

*INVOLVE THE NEXT GENERATION Pass down a love of nature, plants and our environment to kids. There are lots of opportunities for hands-on learning experiences outside.

*EAT LOCALLY By eating foods that are in season, and grown in our local area, we not only support our local ecosystems, but our food will also be fresher and require less fuel (and carbon output) to get to us.

*BE WATER-WISE We waste a lot of water. Tips: Avoid over-watering your garden; don’t let the water run as you brush your teeth; install a low/dual flush toilet.

*TURN IT OFF AND UNPLUG When you leave a room, turn off the lights. Same with the television, the stereo, or any other appliance. Switch to LED lights. Did you know that some appliances like battery chargers and adaptors that are ‘off’ but plugged in, still draw energy?

*ELIMINATE THE USE OF PESTICIDES AND CHEMICALS IN OUR YARDS AND GARDENS We don’t need chemicals to get rid of garden pests: companion planting, natural remedies, and attracting pest predators to our garden can save us money and also save our plants.

*CHOOSE SUSTAINABLE FASHION The fashion industry is responsible for over 8% of total greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable Fashion refers to a clothing supply chain that is ecologically and socially responsible. Help shift the industry and consumers (us!) away from fast fashion and toward sustainable practices in sourcing, production, distribution, marketing, and consumption.

*PLANT A TREE They capture carbon, cool overheated places, benefit agriculture, support pollinators, reduce the risk of disease transmission, and boost local economies. Did you know that planting one oak tree brings in more insect and bird species than an entire yard of plants?

*CLIMATE LITERACY The time is now to create a generation of citizens, workers, students, and leaders ready for climate change. We need public understanding of how to stop climate change and environmental harm.

*CLEAN UP GARBAGE & PLASTIC! IN OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD OR LOCAL PARK Go on a walk with gloves and a trash bag and help to clean up any garbage that you find. You can also find organized groups to join such as The Great Global Cleanup® https://www.earthday.org/campaign/cleanup/ It’s a worldwide campaign to remove billions of pieces of trash from neighborhoods, beaches, rivers, lakes, trails, and parks — reducing waste and plastic pollution, improving habitats, and preventing harm to wildlife and humans. It’s up to us. It’s not someone else’s problem, it’s all of ours.
