Ready. Set. No, wait …

in Cathy's Blog

Fear and trepidation are common feelings experienced in the entrepreneurial arena, especially when it comes to launching (or expanding) your business or introducing a new concept.

Fear, if we allow it, can put us in Perpetual Preparation Mode.

Perpetual Preparation Mode is what is also known as procrastination due to fear of failure or wanting things to be ‘perfect’ before it goes out into the public.

News Flash! Nothing is perfect. The best way to ‘perfect’ whatever it is that you are offering is to bring it to the best version you can within a certain time frame and then based on feedback and/or performance – revise, edit or scrap.

You’re going to wear yourself out by being in this state of constant revisions, tweaks and font changes. You’ve done your research, you’ve made educated decisions and now it’s time to let go.

Second News Flash! There’s no ‘cure’. It’s who we are as entrepreneurs and business owners. It’s what got us from an idea to a concept to a finished product. We have a vested interest in its success or failure. And I wouldn’t want it any other way!

Even after years of creating content, programs, products, I still find myself up in the wee hours of the night contemplating a colour gradient change or the order of the content delivery or whether spacing should be 2 instead of 1.5 Really?

If you don’t nip it in the bud, you’ll be in perpetual preparation mode faster than you can say “just one more edit…”

How I work around that is to imagine what the worst possible outcome could be if you present it ‘as is’. Will the ground open up and swallow you? Will the world come to an end? Will there be no more bubbles in my champagne?

Seriously though, you may get rejected by a potential customer or maybe more than one but there are many, many people who need what you are offering. The great thing is, ‘No’ usually means ‘Not Now’ not ‘Never’.

The best thing you can do is get out there in front of your potential clients in every way possible – perfect or not.
