Say “NO” to Miscellaneous

in Cathy's Blog

We all have one.

No, it’s not your junk drawer or that corner drawer in the kitchen. It’s that folder that says “MISC”  or “Miscellaneous”. It could be in our paper files, our computer or email folders – but it’s there.

Say “No” to miscellaneous.

A pile of paper or a collection of unfiled documents represents a collection of decisions not made. Having a folder labeled “MISCELLANEOUS” is just a catch-all place to put all those items that you can’t (or won’t!) make up your mind about.

But unlike the kitchen drawer, that miscellaneous file has a nifty way of disappearing and gets forgotten until you put something else in it or you can’t find what you’re looking for so you go wading through the misc folder hoping it’s in there. Twenty minutes later …

Whether you’re working with paper or electronic documents, be more specific with your folder names. I’m a big fan of ‘large’ topics like – house, car, clients, stationary – and then breaking it into sub-folders that are more specific. It makes for a better functioning filing system and makes it so much easier to find what I’m looking for.

Remember – every minute you spend organizing, translates into an hour added to your productivity.

“A good system shortens the road to the goal.”
