Did you also know that according to the Business Council of Canada, as of 2015, entrepreneurs lead 98% of all small and medium-sized businesses in the country — and they create nearly half of all new jobs, generate approximately one third of the Canadian GDP, and produce a quarter of our exports.

Here are some ideas on how you can help your community by ‘buying small business/buying local’:
- Look at the product label to see where it was made – if possible, first choose items made in BC, then Western Canada, then Canada.
- Whenever possible, buy from small businesses and independent retailers rather than large retail chains. Sometimes it might be slightly more expensive, but supporting local small businesses supports your community.
- Winter markets and craft fairs are a great way to discover gifts for friends or family. You might be pleasantly surprised at your options – a jar of jam, hand-blown glass, a painting by a local artist – the possibilities are endless!
In a nutshell, local businesses are something to be proud of – from the butcher to the yoga studio – and when we all support them, we can also help entrepreneurship thrive, which adds to local prosperity and innovation. Every local retailer is one of our neighbours who has taken a risk to make our community a better, stronger place. When we all buy local, we tell our neighbours and shopkeepers that we believe our community is worth investing in.
