The Ruby Slipper Principle

in Cathy's Blog

In my coaching and consulting career, I have worked with many entrepreneurs that I knew had incredible potential but they didn’t see it in themselves. They were always looking for that magic seminar or secret system that would get them to where they want to be.

Funny thing is, they had what it took all along!

How many of you are just starting out with your own business?  You’ve got the passion, enthusiasm and desire to help others but the business is not growing the way you’d like it to. You’ve got the website, you’ve got your product but still nothing. No one seems to be in need of your help. So what do you do?

The answer seems obvious to you. You need to learn more.

So you subscribe to multiple newsletters. You purchase books and coaching packages, but still you feel you’re missing something. You’ve sat through so many webinars and training programs, you could fill a terrabite drive with your notes and worksheets. Your collection of sales and motivational books rivals the local library’s!

The mistake that most entrepreneurs make is they forget to take an ‘internal’ inventory before they go in search of more information. As a result, their information and their energies are not focused on what will move them forward. And you don’t have to be new to business to make this mistake!

Glinda the Good Witch of The Wizard of Oz™ shares a valuable lesson every entrepreneur can learn.

Dorothy: Oh, will you help me? Can you help me?
Glinda, the Good Witch: You don’t need to be helped any longer. You’ve always had the power to go back to Kansas.
Dorothy: I have?
Scarecrow: Then why didn’t you tell her before?
Glinda, the Good Witch: Because she wouldn’t have believed me. She had to learn it for herself.

Cue the music! It’s the major ‘AHA!’ moment!

Right now, right this minute take an Internal Inventory. Ask yourself, “What do I already have/know?” “What am I really good at?” Make a list of your life and work experiences. Go back year by year, decade by decade (if you’re that old) What are your skills, talents and abilities?

Now ask yourself, “How can I monetize what I already have/know?” (I’ll give you a hint – it’s called a Business Plan!)

If you need help with your Internal Inventory or answering that last question, you know where to find me.
