“Summer-ize” Your Business Goals

in Cathy's Blog

Woohoo! The weather is awesome, BBQ’s every weekend and business sucks! Wait! What?

Remember the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of this year? The ones you were so excited about and determined to make happen? Well, it’s ‘check in’ time.

Sadly, by July, more than half of people have given up on the goals they set for themselves in January.  Is this you?

It’s easy to get distracted and sidetracked from your priorities with the daily happenings of life, but don’t get discouraged. Goals are meant to serve you, not the other way around. Don’t beat yourself up – your not the only one who is persona-non-completer, instead, recommit to what you want to achieve over the next six months, evaluate where you are right now and create a new plan of action. And give yourself credit for all that you’ve accomplished so far!

The summer is the perfect midway point to reevaluate, refresh and renew your business’ goals for the rest of year. If you made goals in January, pull them out and ask the following questions:

  1. Are they realistic? Do you have the resources and time to pursue them?
  2. Are they specific? Vague goals such as ‘lose weight’ or ‘become famous’ are too nebulous to even become a reality. (The Universe LOVES it when you’re specific, it makes it so much easier to give it to you. )
  3. Are they achievable? Most entrepreneurs want to eat the whole elephant (Big Goals) at once. Big goals usually are the result of a hundred smaller goals. The only way to eat that elephant is one bite at a time (mini goals) so attack your Big Goals the same way. Celebrate when you achieve them and then set more  mini goals that will get you another step closer to your elephant.

Using these questions as a guide, grab a piece of paper and a pen, then make some decisions:

  1. Can you get back on track and still meet your goals?
  2. Are there any less important tasks that are distracting you from your priority goals? if so, what are they?
  3. Do you need to realign your day-to-day tasks with your top business goals?
  4. Should you start fresh with new, more specific, realistic goals?

If you have to start fresh, there’s no rule that says goals can only be set in January. Start now!  (you’ll be glad you did!)
