Small Business Saturday – Shop Local

in Cathy's Blog

First comes Black Friday and on the other end of the weekend is Cyber Monday but wedged in between is a little known day called “Small Business Saturday”.

Right now all I see is the media reporting on how Canadians will be shopping south of the border this weekend. What about our local merchants? Where do they fit in?

Do the stores you shop at this weekend contribute to our society with taxes? Will they be sponsoring your son or daughter’s baseball team? How about those donations for the school fundraiser – do they donate coffee cards or yards of chocolate? And who’s going to hire your kids when they’re old enough to have a job? Not the Walmart in Bellingham, that’s for sure.

I know that our economy kinda sucks right now and of course we all want the biggest bang for our buck. As a parent I understand that we want to give our children everyting thing on their wish list. All I’m asking is you give some thought to the power of your spending – and it is powerful. Supporting local businesses can make a difference in our society and our economy and we CAN make a difference.

Buy small. Buy local.
