I Don’t Know
You don’t have all the answers. Nobody does. And we aren’t fooling anyone by trying to make it appear we do.
The common myth is that Leaders are supposed to be all knowing. And since we’re the leader of our company, we’re supposed to know everything. After all, if the leader doesn’t know, who does?
Of course no one is expected to have all the answers. Still, many of us are unwilling to admit when we don’t know something about our business.
There can be benefits to admitting you don’t have the answers. Being honest increases your credibility. No rational human expects anyone to know everything. (emphasis on ‘rational’!) It can be refreshing to learn that you don’t always know it all. This makes it easier for others to relate. People who admit they could use help and advice greatly increase the chance of getting good ideas from others.
The best entrepreneurs are those who ask the right questions and know how to listen and incorporate many different viewpoints.
Thinking we have all the answers and looking strong in all situations is NOT the role of a leader.. Sometimes “I don’t know, I need help”, may be the best thing you can say.
