Throw Out Those Goals!
Another month and another set of goals that may have gone by the wayside. It’s not even the end of February and already you’re behind in those goals that you so carefully set for this year. Argh!!
It’s OK. Not all entrepreneurs work well with setting specific goals. Sometimes it is about becoming clearer on who you are, where you are now and where you want to be in the next 6 months – in the next year. An internal audit if you will.
Is this you? Then my advice to you is – throw out those goals!.
Imagine, Clarify and Engage.
Instead of concrete goals that are specific, why not engage in developing qualities that you already possess. Instead of setting a goal of cranking out a blog post once a week, why not fine tune your writing skills so that it becomes a creative outlet rather than a chore. Invest in public speaking coaching so that your presentations become engaging rather than memorized. Your greatest asset is YOU.
Imagine not only where you want to be at the end of this coming year but WHO you want to be. Everything we aspire to is but one destination in our journey called business and ultimately life.
Clarify your values and what you want your life and business to be about. We are the sum of numerous life experiences and the knowledge we gain. Take a moment to ‘check in’ and acknowledge some of the advances that you’ve made, where you are right now and the person you want to be at the end of this year.
Be engaged NOW in your surroundings, the people, the moment. Ask yourself the following questions.
Who am I right now? (This is for YOU to answer, it’s not what you friend would say or what is on your CV.)
What am I doing right now in my business/life and why? Is it working? If not, why am I still doing it?
What would I love to do/try if there were no obstacles? Why am I not doing it? How can I do it?
What am I going to change right now to move me in this new direction?
For those of you who find it challenging to attain the ‘goals’ that you set at the beginning of each year, I encourage you to shift focus off the ‘prize’ and onto the changes, however subtle, you can make to achieve the success you envision.
And the rest of you? I want your revised goals on my desk by next Monday!
