It’s About Creating Memories…

in Cathy's Blog

It’s about creating memories, not giving ‘stuff”.

Mother’s Day is this weekend. My mom died 40 years ago, yet she is still with me through my memories. While flowers are nice, and a gift is always appreciated; the gift that has the greatest impact is the gift of time.

Our lives seem to speed up with each passing year and it can be so easy to say “I’m really busy.” and open that app that will send flowers or order some ‘thing’ on Amazon and it will delivered for you. But think about it … when that person is gone from our life, what will you have to look back on – your Visa receipts?

I encourage you to spend some quality time with people that you care for.

My Mom’s favourite number was 17, so to help you get started, here are 17 great ways to give the gift of time:
  1. Give her a much needed day off – From everything cooking, cleaning, and errands.
  1. Offer to wash her car AND take her for a drive.
  1. Make your own Mother’s Day Card. (it’s really not that hard)
  1. Put together a picture frame with a picture of you and your mom when you were a child and one of you both as adults.
  1. Rent her favourite movie or one she’s been wanting to see, stock up on her favourite snacks, and watch it with her. (don’t forget the tissue if it’s a chick flick)
  1. Start up a herb garden for her with little signs for each herb and a collection of recipes or uses for each herb.
  1. Go out and get your hair done together. It shows true devotion if you’re a guy.
  1. Get a photo shoot done of all the kids (and grandkids) or if you’re really tech savvy, put together a collage of your entire family tree from pictures in her photo album.
  1. Make her a collection of her favourite family recipes, or have the ones that have been passed down from generations bound together with photos and family stories from the past.
  1. Take a class together of something she always wanted to do like making chocolate truffles at Purdy’s. *smile*
  1. Get all the special moms in your life – your mom, grandmother, mother in law, aunts, best friend’s mom over for a special Mother’s Day brunch.
  1. Create a jar of Smiles. Come up with a number of reasons why you love your mom, in your own handwriting, write them on scraps paper, roll them up and put them in a jar so that whenever she needs a smile she can take one from the jar.
  1. Take the time to set up her laptop, iPod, or other electronic device. Or better yet, do a backup of her files so they won’t get lost.
  1. Paint something for her – a cupboard, a chair, or just touch ups around the house.
  1. If the weather is nice, pack a picnic lunch for you and mom. Don’t forget the wine!
  1. And sometimes, the best time is spent with a cup of tea and conversation.

Happy Mother’s Day.
